Sir Greg Doran, Cameron Mackintosh Professor, stages Two Gentlemen of Verona
Actor, director and producer Sir Greg Doran, this year’s Cameron Mackintosh Visiting Professor of Contemporary Theatre co-directed The Two Gentlemen of Verona at the Oxford Playhouse. Two Gents, the only in the First Folio which Greg had not directed before, debuted in May to rave reviews.Speaking on his choice of play, he said: “Two Gents explores the challenges of young people setting out in the world – leaving home, trying to make their way, falling in love, making mistakes. As students have that lived experience, it is vital that how the production looks and sounds and feels reflects that experience.”
Through the Cameron Mackintosh professorship, the play was produced, acted and co-directed by students, including Catz students.
Earlier in the year, Greg gave his inaugural lecture ‘My Shakespeare’, which can be viewed on Youtube. St Catherine’s College also hosted a conversation between Greg and former Cameron Mackintosh professor Adjoa Andoh, chaired by Professor Emma Smith (Faculty of English), titled ‘Shakespeare’s Difficult Language.’
We congratulate all involved with the production and thank Greg for his hard work as this year’s Cameron Mackintosh professor.
