Catz alumni recognised in 2021 New Year Honours

St Catherine’s College is pleased to share the news that two of our alumni have been recognised in the 2021 New Year Honours list.

Michael Fell (2001, Geography)

Mike was awarded an OBE for public and voluntary service to security. He is the Deputy Director of Cyber Operations at H M Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

Mike oversees HMRC’s cyber security operations and has worked in a range of security roles for the UK Government, including with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in Afghanistan and on the 2012 London Olympics.

On his award, Mike commented: ‘I am blown away and hugely honoured by this recognition, which is more a reflection of the relentless hard work of a range of security teams that I’ve had the privilege of leading.

‘I’m massively proud of the achievements in protecting the UK public from a range of cyber scams and threats, and in helping others learn about keeping themselves safe.’

Adding sound advice for us all, he added: ‘Don’t forget – if it’s too good to be true, it probably is!’

David Mahoney (1995, Modern History)

David was recently awarded an MBE for services to sport. He is Chief Operating Officer at the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

David played a key role in the response of cricket to the Covid-19 pandemic this year, which enabled a return to the sport. He was also a critical part of creating the ECB’s five-year strategy, Inspiring Generations, and its South Asian Action Plan.

Professor Eleanor Stride, Catz Fellow and Statutory Professor of Biomaterials in the Department of Engineering Science and the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences, was also made an OBE this year.

We extend very warm congratulations to all of them.
