St Catz announces major gift in Chemistry

St Catherine’s College is proud to announce a generous gift of £50,000 aimed at furthering the academic success of students in Chemistry. The donation, given in memory of Alexander Oxford by his widow Janet Oxford, will fund two key initiatives: the Foundation Scholarship, with a preference for Chemistry, and the A. W. Oxford Prizes in Chemistry, awarded to the most improved 2nd and 3rd year students.

Janet Oxford, commenting on the creation of the prize, said: “The prizes are awarded in memory of Alexander (Alec) Oxford, my husband. Alec attended St Catherine’s from 1959 to 1965 and went on to have a successful career in medicinal chemistry. I wanted to create a lasting legacy in Alec’s name to encourage future generations of chemistry students.”

Professor John Foord, Director of Studies in Chemistry, said: “As Director of Studies in Chemistry, I share the delight of all the Chemistry tutorial team in learning of this generous gift to St Catherine’s. The donation will in part support our participation in the Opportunity Oxford programme, helping UK offer-holders prepare for their studies and gain insight into life at Oxford. Additionally, it will fund two prizes recognizing the most improved students in their end-of-year examinations. This gift significantly enhances our commitment to undergraduate education in Chemistry.”

The 2nd year prize was awarded to Sonari Amabibi, who expressed his gratitude: “I am elated to have been awarded this prize after the effort I have put into my examinations and studies throughout my time on the course! This prize exemplifies the college’s support of my subject and the academic outcome of undergraduates here at Catz.”

Tom Mosseri, the 3rd year prize-winner, also reflected on the recognition: “I was delighted to hear that I had been awarded this academic prize for my efforts during the most challenging examinations I have faced. It’s amazing to hear that my subject is being supported through this donation to Catz as it will help future students in the same position.”

We are grateful to Janet Oxford for this generous donation.
