St Catz Alumni recognised in Queen’s Birthday Honours
We are immensely proud that two of our alumni have been recognised in the 2018 Queen’s Birthday Honours list.
Professor Sarah Harper (1979, Anthropology & Geography) has been made a CBE for services to the science of demography. Sarah is Professor of Gerontology at the University of Oxford and Director of the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing, which she founded in 1997 to undertake research into the implications of population change.
Commenting on her award, she said: “I am honoured that the work on population ageing which I and colleagues have undertaken here at Oxford over the last 20 years has received such recognition, and it is immensely rewarding to have our research and the impact it is able to have on policy and practice thus recognised.”

For services to Literature, Jeanette Winterson (1978, English) was made a CBE. The award-winning writer and acclaimed author of Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit was awarded an OBE in 2006, and recently delivered the BBC’s prestigious Richard Dimbleby Lecture, exploring what we can learn from the Suffragette movement of a century ago. Of the award, she said: “I am so happy about the CBE, for myself of course, but because the arts are so important in our world. They are a means of connection and a way of reducing chaos.”
