Former Catz Fellow Dame Angela McLean named new Chief Scientific Adviser

Dame Angela McLean DBE FRS, Professor of Mathematical Biology at the University of Oxford and former fellow of St Catherine’s College (2000 – 2007), has been appointed the new Government Chief Scientific Adviser. She is the first woman to ever hold the post.

The Government Chief Scientific Adviser (GCSA) is responsible for:

  • providing scientific advice to the Prime Minister and members of cabinet
  • advising the government on aspects of policy on science and technology
  • ensuring and improving the quality and use of scientific evidence and advice in government

Dame Angela’s research interests lie in the use of mathematical models to aid our understanding of the evolution and spread of infectious agents and was deputy to then-GCSA Sir Patrick Vallance during the Covid-19 pandemic.
