Catz Fellow to lead Oxford’s Human-Centered AI Lab
St Catherine’s College Fellow Professor Philipp Koralus has been appointed as the inaugural McCord Professor of Philosophy and AI at the University of Oxford and will be leading the newly-created Human-Centered AI Lab. Professor Koralus’s work focusses on the human capacity for reasoning and decision-making, and how it relates to artificial agents and large language models like GPT.
The HAI Lab, which launches autumn 2024, will ‘be a space for technologists and philosophers to prototype ideas and think about a future of AI that is grounded in agency and human virtues.’ It will will eventually move to its permanent location in the Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities, anticipated to open in the autumn of 2025.
Commenting, Professor Koralus said:
‘HAI Lab will combine the practice of philosophy and the practice of engineering and explore ways in which AI can amplify human capacities rather than replace them. It is in that sense that HAI Lab is the Laboratory for Human-Centered AI.’
We congratulate Professor Koralus on this appointment.
