Catz College Lecturer to become Lord Mayor of Oxford

Dr Louise Upton, a St Catherine’s College Lecturer in Medicine, is set to become the new Lord Mayor of Oxford in May. The Lord Mayor generally carries out more than 300 engagements each year, including Royal visits and community group meetings, as well as fundraising for local charities.

She studied Biochemistry at New College, Oxford (1986-90). She did her PhD in the Physiology Department of University College London. She spent three years at the Hopital Pitié-Salpétrière in Paris in an INSERM laboratory before returning to a post-doctoral position in the University Laboratory of Physiology back in Oxford. Dr Upton was then the Mouse Neuroscientist on a large Wellcome Trust-funded project in the newly-merged Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics (DPAG) in Oxford for over a decade. She now runs the Neurophysiology core facility in DPAG.

In 2013, she was elected to Oxford City Council representing the Walton Manor ward. She is also Cabinet Member for Planning and previously Cycling Champion.

Commenting on her appointment, Louise said: “I am so looking forward to being the Lord Mayor. We live in one of the most vibrant, most historic, most diverse cities in the UK, and I will be incredibly proud to represent every single one of our citizens.”

We congratulate Louise on this momentous appointment!
