Alexander Campkin for Composer in Residence

Catz alum Alexander Campkin (2002, Music) was earlier this year appointed Composer in Residence with Cantorum Choir, a choir of approximately 40 voices based in Cookham, Berkshire. On the 14th October, the choir performed their Autumn Concert which featured the world premiere of Campkin’s new work Waterfall, commissioned by Cantorum Choir and directly inspired by Vaughan Williams’ Mass in G Minor, which was also performed on the evening.

Mustafah Dhada receives American Historical Association Award

The American Historical Association recently announced its list of Awards and Prizes, with Professor Mustafah Dhada (1977, Social Studies) receiving this year’s Martin A. Klein Prize for his book The Portugese Massacre of Wiriyamu in Colonial Mozambique, 1964-2013 (Bloomsbury). The Award recognizes the most distinguished work of scholarship on African history published in English during the previous calendar year. In making its selection, the prize committee pays particular attention to methodological innovation, conceptual originality and literary excellence.

Kate Hunt elected as Fellow of Royal Society of Edinburgh

Professor Kate Hunt (1977, Human Sciences) was this year elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Kate is a Professor of Gender and Health and the Associate Director of the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit at the University of Glasgow, where her research focuses on understanding and improving human health and wellbeing, with a particular interest in the social determinants of health, health behaviours and health inequalities.

Anne Brock appointed Master Distiller

Gin brand Bombay Sapphire has appointed Dr Anne Brock (2004, Chemistry) as its new master distiller. Dr Brock achieved a DPhil in Chemistry at St Catherine’s in 2012, and currently holds a position on the board of directors at the Gin Guild. After her time at Catz, Dr Brock joined Bermondsey Distillery, producers of Jensen’s Gin. Now, in her new role at Bacardi, she will work alongside the Master of Botanicals and lead a team of 14 distillers.

Speaking of her appointment, she said: “I am extremely proud to be joining Bombay Sapphire and to be representing such an iconic leader of the gin category. As an individual who is incredibly passionate about gin, I look forward to working with a team who share a drive to push boundaries and innovate.”
