Young, Gifted, and Black: Celebrating Black History Month at St Catherine’s College
St Catherine’s College marked Black History Month in October 2025 with Young, Gifted, and Black – an inspiring afternoon of reflection and conversation exploring identity, leadership, and belonging.

Introduced by the Master, Jude Kelly CBE, the event featured Lord Victor Adebowale, Visitor of the College, in discussion with current students. Together, the group shared personal insights on what it means to be ‘young, gifted, and Black’ today, celebrating individuality while challenging the systems and perceptions that can limit opportunity.
Lord Adebowale spoke about authenticity and purpose in leadership, encouraging young people to use their voices with confidence and compassion. Our students reflected on their experiences at Oxford and beyond, highlighting the importance of visibility, mentorship, and self-belief in shaping future paths.
The discussion struck a chord with the audience, prompting thoughtful conversation about how institutions like Catz can continue to create spaces where everyone feels seen, supported, and empowered to thrive.
