What is a Virtual Taster Day?

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to study a subject you’re passionate about at Oxford? Our Virtual Taster Days give you the opportunity to experience an Oxbridge-style academic masterclasses with academics as well as meeting current Undergraduates. There will also be a variety of sessions to help you with the application process and give you some helpful tips.

Which Virtual Taster Days are on offer?

This May Half Term (31st May – 4th June), we will be hosting three taster days:

  • Music (Monday 31st May)
  • Modern Languages and Linguistics (Wednesday 2nd June)
  • Women in Science (Friday 4th June)

All events will be held over Microsoft Teams (no account needed)

Am I eligible to apply?

Music Taster Day & Modern Languages Taster Day: open to all UK Year 12 students.

Women in Science Taster Day: open to UK Year 12 students whose identity includes female or non-binary.

All sessions are free. Should the event be over subscribed, priority will be given to applicants from state schools.

How do I apply?

To apply, please complete the application form in the relevant section for each Taster Day below. The deadline to receive applications has now passed. Thank you to all who applied, we will be in touch shortly. We hope to run similar events later on this year and next. These will be advertised on the Oxford Outreach Calendar, found here.

 

Music Virtual Taster Day

The Music Department at Catz are delighted to invite you to our Music Virtual Taster Day. We will be hosting a variety of sessions exploring what Music at Oxford has to offer. There will be an opportunity to meet the Music tutors here at Catz, as well as current undergraduates studying Music at Oxford. Taster sessions hosted by leading academics will give you a real taste of what’s on offer: performance, composition and historical analysis to name but a few!

10.30 – 11.15                 Meet Current Music Students + Q&A

12.00 – 12.30               “The signs of silence: Absent sounds in musical notation”  – Christian Thomas Leitmeir

12.30 – 13.00               “Beethoven, Bridgetower and Bridgerton”  – Laura Tunbridge

13.30 – 14.00               Performance opportunities at Catz and Oxford (Cayenna Ponchione-Bailey)

14.00 – 14.40               “Where can Music at Oxford take you?” – Alumni Panel

14.40 – 15.00               The Application Process: Q&A with the Admissions Team

Modern Languages and Linguistics Virtual Taster Day

Wednesday 2nd June, 10.00 – 16.00

The Modern Languages and Linguistics Virtual Taster Day will include workshops by University academics designed to inspire students and give prospective applicants a real feel for studying Modern Languages at University. Timetable:

Morning (from 10.00): Introductory sessions (for all attendees)

  • Presentation: An introduction to Modern Languages at Oxford
  • Q&A: ‘Meet the Students’ –  with current Undergraduates at Catz studying Modern Languages

Afternoon: A selection of academic taster sessions with the Modern Languages Tutors at Catz including:

  • French
  • Spanish
  • German
  • Italian
  • Russian
  • Linguistics
  • Modern Greek*
  • Czech*

*held only if sufficient demand is shown.

Please note: all languages apart from French and Spanish can be studied from scratch (ab initio) at Oxford without having studied that language at school and taster sessions will reflect this. For more information, please visit the University’s Modern Languages webpage here.

The event is free and open to all UK Year 12s. Should the event be oversubscribed, priority will be given to applicants from state schools.

In the application form below, please select a preference for which subject taster sessions you would like to attend. We will do our best to accommodate your request but please be aware you may not be able to attend all your preferred sessions. All attendees will automatically be allocated to at least one ab initio taster session.

Women in Science Virtual Taster Day

Friday 4th June, 10.00 – 17.00

St Catherine’s College has a proud history of supporting Women in Science and is pleased to host a Virtual Taster day for young women hoping to study a STEMM subject at University.

Morning (from 10.00): Introductory sessions (for all attendees)

  • Presentation: Application Process for STEMM at University
  • Q&A: ‘Meet the Students’ –  with current Undergraduates at Catz studying STEMM subjects.

In the afternoon, Taster Sessions will be available for the following subjects. To view more information about each subject, please click the relevant link.

The event is free and open to all UK Year 12 students whose identity includes female or non binary. Should the event be oversubscribed, priority will be given to applicants from state schools.

In the application form below, please select a preference for which of the above subject sessions you would like to attend. We suggest you pick multiple sessions and will do our best to accommodate your request. Please be aware you may not be able to attend all your preferred sessions due to timetable clashes.
