2014 marks the 40th anniversary of co-residence within five of Oxford's Colleges. In celebration of this milestone, the University of Oxford Alumni Office, in conjunction with the five participating colleges, are hosting a series of special events.

We are delighted to be hosting a lecture on the theme of Enterprising Women, featuring Harriet Sergeant (1974, English), Jane Platt (1975, Modern Languages) and Alex Polizzi (1990, English). Each of these Catz alumnae have gone on to forge highly successful careers in their chosen professions, and will be discussing the achievements and the experiences that they faced along the way.

Lecture to be followed by drinks and canapés.

Panellist Biographies

Harriet Sergeant (1974, English), Author, Journalist & Research Fellow

Harriet Sergeant is a journalist, author and Research Fellow of the Centre For Policy Studies, an independent Think Tank. Her latest book, Among the Hoods: My Years with a Teenage Gang, describes her friendship with a south London gang. She has written various reports for the Centre For Policy Studies on topics including immigration, management in the NHS, the police and the care system. Harriet has written for numerous newspapers including the Daily Telegraph, the Sunday Times and the Daily Mail. She regularly appears on TV and radio including Any Questions and Question Time.

Jane Platt (1975, Modern Languages), Chief Executive of National Savings & Investments

Jane Platt is Chief Executive of the state-owned savings bank NS&I, one of the country's biggest savings institutions. Jane began her career as a fund manager in the City, managing pension fund portfolios for Mercury Asset Management before moving to BZW, where she went on to become CEO of Barclays Stockbrokers. She is also a non-executive director of the Financial Conduct Authority and, until recently, was an advisory board member of Women in Banking and Finance. Jane was awarded a CBE in 2013 for Financial Service to the UK.

Alex Polizzi (1990, English), Presenter & Hotelier

Presenter of the highly-acclaimed television programme The Hotel Inspector, Alex Polizzi is a renowned hotelier. She trained at the Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong, and has worked for Marco Pierre White’s Criterion restaurant and at various Rocco Forte hotels worldwide. She ran the Hotel Endsleigh in Devon before launching the highly-praised Hotel Tresanton on the Cornish coast. The Hotel Inspector has been praised by the Radio Times as ‘… among the best of the genre in which an expert descends on people who don’t know what they are doing.’
