Katritzky Lecture 2018

St Catherine’s College and the University of Oxford Chemistry Department are delighted to announce that the 2018 Katritzky Lecture will be delivered by Sir David King HonFREng FRS, titled ‘A Fresh Look at Humanity’s Greatest Ever Challenge: Climate Change’ and taking place on Wednesday 24 October.

Sir David is a leading expert on science policy with a background as a distinguished chemist. He is Emeritus Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Cambridge, having pioneered the study of interactions between gaseous molecules and metal surfaces. Sir David was the Government’s Chief Scientific Advisor from 2000 to 2007, and was the Foreign Secretary’s Special Representative for Climate Change from 2013 to 2017.

The Katritzky Lecture is an annual event in honour of Alan Katritzky (1948, Chemistry), a former undergraduate at St Catz who was elected to an Honorary Fellowship at the College in recognition of his distinguished academic career. Katritzky was a pioneer in the field of heterocyclic chemistry and was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1980. The series was established due to the generosity of Alan and his family, with the first lecture given by Professor Sir John Meurig Thomas in 2009. Sadly, Alan passed away in 2014 at the age of 85.

This year’s lecture will be held in the Bernard Sunley Lecture Theatre, beginning at 5.30pm. Tea will be served in the lecture theatre foyer from 5.00pm.

This is a public lecture and all are welcome. The event is free, and we look forward to seeing you there. If you have any queries, please contact masters.office@stcatz.ox.ac.uk.
