Angela Brueggemann

Angela is a lecturer in the biology of infectious diseases. She gives lectures and tutorials to the biology undergraduates in genetics, infection and pathogenesis, epidemiology, antibiotic resistance and vaccination.

Her main research focus is Streptococcus pneumoniae (the ‘pneumococcus’), a bacterium that is a major cause of diseases such as ear infections, pneumonia and meningitis worldwide. Her research involves using molecular genotyping techniques to understand pneumococcal population biology and the evolution of the pneumococcus subsequent to national vaccine implementation. This has important implications for the long-term efficacy of the current pneumococcal vaccine and for the design of future vaccines. Other research projects relate to bacterial pathogenesis, and the aetiology of respiratory infections among children.
