Simon Russell Beale to be Cameron Mackintosh Visiting Professor

We are delighted to announce that Simon Russell Beale is to be the next Cameron Mackintosh Visiting Professor of Contemporary Theatre, based at St Catherine’s College at the University of Oxford. He succeeded Stephen Fry in February 2015 to become the 24th holder of the Professorship. His inaugural lecture will take place on Monday 2 March 2015.

We are delighted to be welcoming Sir Tom Stoppard to St Catz to deliver his inaugural lecture as the 26th holder of the Cameron Mackintosh Visiting Professorship in Contemporary Theatre.

John Bayley 1925-2015

The College is deeply saddened to announce that Professor John Bayley, former Warton Professor of English Literature and Professorial Fellow of the College, died on 12 January 2015. John came to the College in 1973 and retired in 1992, when he became an Emeritus Fellow. He was the widower of the late Iris Murdoch, and leaves behind him his widow Audi.

John was a much-loved colourful character around the College, bringing much joy to many people. He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1990, and appointed CBE in 1999.

 

Prime Minister Visits Catz Alumnus Start-up in USA

Prime Minister David Cameron today visited the premises of 1776, a firm which was co-founded in 2013 by Catz alumnus Evan Burfield (2002, PPE). Based in Washington D.C., 1776 is a platform designed to connect start-ups with the resources that they need to excel.

Attending a breakfast meeting on cyber security, the Prime Minister took a brief tour of 1776, which acts as a business incubator and investment fund to guide early-stage ventures in sectors like energy, education, and health care that often go on to work with governments.

Lady Nairne

The College is deeply saddened to announce that Lady Nairne, widow of former Master Sir Patrick Nairne (1981-8), passed away very peacefully in Oxfordshire on 23 December 2014. She will be greatly missed. She had been cared for at the John Radcliffe Hospital and, subsequently, at the Witney Community Hospital.

A Thanksgiving Service will take place at St Mary’s Church, Charlbury, at 2pm on Saturday 14 February 2015.

Alumnus Appointed High Court Judge

Alumnus Ian Dove (1982, Law) , Deputy Head of No5 Chambers, has been appointed a High Court judge at a ceremony at the Royal Courts of Justice. The Queen conferred a Knighthood on Ian.

Ian first began his career in Law at No5 Chambers 28 years ago. He has been described by Legal 500 as ‘an excellent strategist and advocate’.

Ian was elevated to Queen’s Counsel in 2003, and is a respected barrister in the Planning & Environmental & Public Law fields taking on many notable cases during his time at No5.

Catz Welcomes Nobel Laureate

We were honoured to welcome Nobel Laureate and ex-US Energy Secretary, Professor Steven Chu, to speak at Catz on Wednesday 12 November 2014. The event marked the inaugural lecture for the newly-formed St Catherine's College Speaker Society, a student-run initiative aimed at bringing interesting and high-profile speakers to the College to give talks.
