Catz alumnus named Leader of New Zealand's Opposition

Catz alumnus Simon Bridges (2004, Law) was yesterday voted leader of New Zealand’s opposition party, the National Party. Simon studied the BCL at St Catz before returning to New Zealand, where he has been a MP for Tauranga since 2008, during which time he has served as Minister of Transport, Minister of Economic Development and Leader of the House, among other Cabinet roles.

He is the first person with Maori ancestry to serve as leader of the National Party, and the first to lead a major party in New Zealand.

Our 150th Anniversary

We're excited to be celebrating the College's 150th anniversary throughout the academic year 2018/19, in recognition of our earliest origins as the Delegacy for Unattached Students.

St Catherine's traces its descent from the Scholares Non Ascripti, or Delegacy for Unattached Students, founded by Statute on 11th June, 1868. This was established as part of an expansion of the University so that students would be able to gain an Oxford education without the costs of college membership.

We will be marking this momentous occasion with a vibrant events programme, culminating in an Anniversary Weekend on the 14th-15th September 2019. We hope that these events will serve as a perfect opportuity for our community of alumni, students, parents and friends to join together in celebration. For more information, visit: stcatz.ox.ac.uk/events

On 19th March 2018, our Development Assistant Colette Lewis was featured on BBC Radio Oxford speaking about the research we have been doing with the Oxfordshire Family History Society to find out more about our very first students. Click here to listen to the show again.

Florence Ward

Hi, I'm Flo Ward and I'm in my 2nd year studying English Literature at St Catz. Alongside my studies at Catz, I am a passionate writer and am involved in lots of student journalism - something I hope to pursue after my degree. What I love most about Catz is the endlessly friendly atmosphere and sense of community, and I'm excited to have the chance to talk to alumni about their experiences of such an amazing college!
