Catz Student in BBC Young Musician Category Final

Current Catz student and flautist Daniel Shao (2013, Music) performed as a finalist in the Woodwind Category of the 2014 BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, which was shown on BBC Four on Friday 2 May.

Over 450 entries were received for the contest from musicians aged between 8-18 years old, and Daniel performed in the woodwind category along with four other musicians. Since the competition’s first outing in 1978, BBC Young Musician has established a reputation for finding outstanding new talent.

Daniel began his musical studies at the age of seven on the piano, and with the flute at the age of nine. He has previously studied at the Purcell School of Music and the Royal College of Music’s Junior Department, and has won national and international competitions including first prize at the 2013 International Award ‘Carl Reinecke’ (Junior Category). As an orchestral flautist he has played with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.

The Woodwind Category Final of of BBC Young Musician of the Year 2014 took place at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff. The programme is available on BBC iPlayer here.
