The Cameron Mackintosh Lecture Series

The Cameron Mackintosh Lecture Series

In 1990, the Cameron Mackintosh Foundation endowed a Chair of Contemporary Theatre establishing a visiting professorship at the University held with a Professional Fellowship at a College. Sir Cameron’s aim, which was warmly welcomed by the University, was to encourage and promote the already enthusiastic interest at Oxford in the study and practice of contemporary theatre. St Catherine's College was delighted to be chosen as the College of which the Professorship was to be held.

In the 27 years of its existence, the Visiting Professorship has been held entirely by theatre practitioners; a condition of the endowment dear to the heart of Sir Cameron himself. As can been seen from the list of those who have held the post, we have had directors, actors, producers and other members of creative teams.

The Visiting Professorship is awarded to a new chair on an annual basis. Throughout their tenure, the holder of this chair usually delivers two public lectures, and one, or sometimes more, smaller more intimate student workshops.
