Crime drama Endeavour comes to Catz

Spoiler alert: No murders took place at St Catz during the filming of this episode!

Oxford’s most famous criminal detective paid a visit to St Catherine’s last year. The cast and crew of the television series Endeavour spent a few days at the College in the summer filming the latest episode of the Inspector Morse prequel series.

In the story St Catz, rechristened ‘Lovelace’ for the TV series, plays host to a widely anticipated chess match between a Russian diplomat and the College’s supercomputer. Things take a darker turn when the body of one of the computer research scientists is found floating in the river near Magdalen Bridge.

Speaking on BBC Radio 2 Shaun Evans, who plays the titular character, described the College as a great place to film, commenting that it was “much more modern” than the usual Oxford locations they use and that “it was really interesting and put a completely different spin on the story, which was good”.

Among the Catz locations prominently featured in the episode are the JCR, the river walk and the Master’s lawn. Arne Jacobsen’s iconic glass-covered buildings provide the backdrop to the chess match, with life size pieces strewn across the main quad. It is the first time St Catz has been featured in the Morse franchise since it debuted 30 years ago.

Viewers in the UK can watch the episode on ITV hub. It will be available until 7th February.
