Danish Honour for the Master


 

The Master of St Catherine's College, Professor Roger Ainsworth, was awarded the Knight Order of Dannebrog by His Excellency Birger Riis-Jorgensen, the Danish Ambassador in London, before a distinguished audience of Fellows and their guests at the College's Annual Feast on Friday 29th September. Before presenting the award, the Ambassador spoke of the work that the Master has done and continues to do, in promoting the work of the Danish architect Arne Jacobsen -  the architect of St Catherine's College.
 

The Ambassador said of the Master, "Professor Ainsworth has worked actively to preserve and develop the college buildings as Danish architect Arne Jacobsen's most outstanding architectural work on British soil and at the same time fostered warm relations with the Danish community in the UK."

The Order of the Dannebrog a Danish order of chivalry was instituted in 1671 by the Danish King Christian V.  The order is bestowed each year on about 500 men and women a quarter of whom are foreigners and is a means of honouring and rewarding those individuals who contribute to the arts, sciences or business life of the Danish state.
