Catz Alumna appointed Director of The Royal Institution

Professor Sarah Harper (1979, Anthropology & Geography) has recently been appointed as Director of the Royal Institution (Ri) by its trustees. The Ri has been a leading organisation devoted to scientific education and research since 1799 and its former Directors include the Novel laureate Sir William Bragg.

Professor Harper completed her DPhil at St Catz and subsequently worked for the BBC as a News and Current Affairs Reporter. After returning to academia, Professor Harper has become a leading figure in research around population studies and demographic change, combining academic research with professional commitments. Professor Harper has worked with the Prime Minister’s Council for Science and Technology and has served on many other advisory boards of demographic and population change.

In Oxford, Professor Harper is a Professor of Gerontology and has served as Director of the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing since she founded the centre in 1997. She will continue to be involved with the Institute alongside her new position at the Ri.
