Collecting Your Degree

Degrees at Oxford are not automatically conferred on the successful completion of a course and certificates are not issued by the University until after the formal conferment at a ceremony.

Degrees may be conferred by attendance at a ceremony or in absentia, and application must be made through your college and not to the University direct. The College has a set number of places available for certain dates (see below).

Booking for the spring/summer 2012 degree days has now closed. There will be three further ceremonies in 2012 - one in October and two in November. Booking for these ceremonies will open later in the year. More details will appear on this page closer to the time.

If you would like to receive updates via email about degree day bookings please email college.office@stcatz.ox.ac.uk to request to be added to the mailing list.

To book a place to graduate in absentia, please email college.office@stcatz.ox.ac.uk, stating:

  • The ceremony date you would like,
  • Your full name,
  • Matriculation year,
  • Type of degree (e.g. BA, MEng, MA, DPhil etc)
  • Subject
  • A correspondence address (parental address if you are a current student)
  • An email address (which will be active at least until the ceremony date you would like to book for )

When booking a place to graduate in absentia, please ensure you do so at least three weeks prior to the ceremony at which you wish to graduate .

All other details will be sent to you once you have booked a degree date.

Having been booked into a degree ceremony, you will only be allowed to withdraw or change dates once. If you simply do not turn up on the day, there is a chance your name will be put through in absentia and therefore you will not be able to take your degree in person again.

Graduating for your MA

The MA is an historic award given to successful BA or BFA candidates twenty-one terms after their matriculation. This is not an automatic process and to obtain your MA you must apply to graduate at a degree ceremony (either in person or in absentia) in the usual way outlined above, and pay the £30 MA fee.

Once you have formally graduated you become eligible to put the letters "MA (Oxon)" after your name, but not "MA (Hons)".
