Mark Simpson (2008, Music) has been nominated for The Times Breakthrough Award.

Nominees cover the arts spectrum from literature and dance to film and television. Mark commented, "It would be brilliant if classical music can win out this time!"

Voting is open until 6th May and the award is presented on 5th June at the Savoy.

 

A virtuoso clarinettist and composer, Mark Simpson is a former BBC Young Musician of the Year and former BBC Proms/Guardian Young Composer of the Year. He received commission from the BBC for the Last Night of the Proms in 2012 (for which he composed the orchestral piece 'Sparks') and last year the BBC Philharmonic performed Mark's work 'The Immortal' at the Manchester International Festival. Most recently, he has just written his first Opera, 'Pleasure', which premiered in Leeds this month.
