Physics

The community of physics students and fellows at St Catherine’s is one of the largest and liveliest in the University. There are usually more than thirty physics students (including graduate students) in the College and, typically, more than a third of our finalists obtain first-class degrees.

St Catherine’s is very conveniently situated near to the Department of Physics, where lectures and practicals are held.

Physics graduates go on to careers in university and industrial research, the scientific civil service, the City, and many other areas. Over half typically go on to study for a PhD or equivalent in physics research groups, either at Oxford or at other universities in the UK and abroad.

We recognise and support aptitude and achievement in practical applications of science and technology by awarding the Paul Brooks Prize annually to a Physics student at the College. You can read about this year’s winner and runners up here.
