Rosen"catz" and Guildenstern brought to life

The College was delighted to host Sir Tom Stoppard earlier this term, on 11th October, for his Inaugural Lecture as the Cameron Mackintosh Visiting Professor of Contemporary Theatre. Sir Tom delivered his lecture, entitled Professing, in the Bernard Sunley Lecture Theatre which was packed out with well over 200 guests.

Opening with a musing that the combination of the words ‘Professor’ and ‘Oxford’ induce in him a sense of awe, Sir Tom went on to speak about his wide-ranging and distinguished career in the theatre, drawing on anecdotes and his personal experience throughout. He also hinted at two more events he hopes to run for students throughout course of his year-long professorship with us - one of which took place last week, on 22nd  November, which was Sir Tom 'in conversation with' John Madden, director of Shakespeare In Love and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

Sir Tom’s lecture is available as a podcast and a video for all to enjoy via this link.

The Chair of Contemporary Theatre, founded at St Catherine’s College through a grant from the Mackintosh Foundation, aims to promote interest in, and the study and practice of, contemporary theatre. Sir Tom is the 26th person to hold the Professorship and succeeds Claude-Michel Schönberg.
