St Catz Alumni recognised with CBE and Q.C. honours

Vivienne Cox (1977, Chemistry) has been appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2016 New Year Honours for services to the UK Economy and Sustainability.

Vivienne is former CEO and Vice-President of BP Alternative Energy. From 1996, she managed the development of new business in Central and Eastern Europe, before pulling together all of BP’s trading activities into a single organisation which she led until 2006.

Until recently, she served as Chair of Climate Change Capital, and currently sits on the Board of Rio Tinto plc. She is a non-executive director of the Department for International Development, and sits on the Airports Commission with responsibility for developing ideas to maintain the UK’s status as an international hub for aviation. She is also on the board of BG Group, Pearson and has recently been appointed Chairman of Vallourec SA, a French company in the CAC40.

Guy Vassall-Adams (1989, PPE) is among those taking Silk in the latest round of Queen’s Counsel appointments. Specialising in media law, public law and human rights, Guy’s high profile practice has involved representing national media organisations in open justice, privacy and libel cases, and internet service providers defending cases relating to online publications. Guy worked at Doughty Street Chambers before joining Matrix in November 2013. Before coming to the Bar, he worked as a television journalist and as a humanitarian affairs officer for the United Nations, where he was one of the founders of the humanitarian news service IRIN.

Speaking of his appointment, which will take effect after the appointment ceremony on 22nd February, Guy explained, “I am delighted to have been appointed and I am looking forward to starting my career as a QC.”
